Positano, Since 1897

A Hotel in the Cliff Itself

Hotel Rocca began as a private residence in 1897, built into the living rock of the Positano hillside by a Neapolitan shipping family. Converted to a hotel in 1958, it has been welcoming guests who want something different from Amalfi — not a resort, not a palace, but a place that feels genuinely inhabited.

Fourteen suites. Every one faces the Tyrrhenian Sea. No two are the same size or shape — the cliff dictates the geometry. The terrace restaurant has been serving the same lemon pasta since 1961. The private beach is a seven-minute walk down the cliff path. The boat to Capri leaves at nine.

The Suites

Cut into the Rock, Open to the Sea

Every suite at Hotel Rocca is positioned to face the water. The largest — the Panorama Suite on the third terrace — has a private plunge pool cantilevered over the cliff edge. The smallest is also the oldest: a vaulted stone room on the first level, in use since 1897, with the same tile floor and a window the size of a painting.

All suites include direct terrace access, handmade Vietri ceramic bathroom fixtures, and a daily arrangement of local citrus and Amalfi lemons. Check-in is unhurried. The view greets you before the staff does.

The Terraces

Seven Terraces, Each a Garden

The hotel climbs the cliff in seven terrace levels, each planted with lemon trees, bougainvillea, and rosemary from the hillside. The upper terraces are accessible only by foot — the stone stairway that runs from base to summit is part of the experience of staying here.

Breakfast is served on your private terrace between 7:30 and 11:00. In the afternoon, the terraces quieten. Most guests spend this time reading or looking at the sea.

Ristorante Rocca

Same Kitchen Since 1961

The restaurant occupies the highest terrace, with an unobstructed view of the coast from Positano to Praiano. Chef Marco Ferrante has run the kitchen since 2009, working with the same suppliers his predecessor did: hand-made pasta from the village below, fish brought up from the boats each morning, lemons from the hotel's own trees.

Dinner is served from 19:30 to 22:30. There is a wine list of 140 Campanian labels. Reservations for non-guests available Thursday to Sunday.

There are many hotels on the Amalfi Coast. Most of them are impressive. Hotel Rocca is something different — it feels inhabited, accumulated, loved. The terrace breakfast alone is worth the journey. The lemon pasta at dinner even more so.

We have stayed on the Amalfi Coast seven times over twenty years. This was the first time we stayed somewhere that felt entirely private. The stone and the silence and the sea at once. Our suite was exactly the right size. We extended by three nights.

I was nervous to book directly — I expected a corporate experience. Instead the owner called before arrival to ask about dietary requirements. The attention throughout was extraordinary without ever feeling intrusive. This is what a great hotel does.
